SA Masters Hockey side makes history

It was a major win for local hockey as the South African Masters 35s side made history when it took home a silver medal in the recent World Masters Hockey World Cup.

It was a major win for local hockey as the South African Masters 35s side recently took home a silver medal in the World Masters Hockey World Cup.

The team, which includes several players from Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, finished in overall second place after playing in one of the four finals in Nottingham in the UK.

According to team manager Ridwan Samuels, the team lost in their final game against England and the level of hockey displayed on the day was something to be proud of.

“The final whistle blew and we had lost 1–0 but what a final, the stage was set for the next three finals to come. I am super proud of the team. We made history for a South African men’s team to win a medal at a major event [world cup].

“The support we got back home from our loved ones, friends and family was amazing, social media went mad. SA Masters Hockey and SA Hockey Association were also super proud of what we achieved, setting the bar and encouraging more players to join masters hockey,” said Samuels.
