1st Bryanston Scout reflects on journey

BRYANSTON – Sumner encourages more children and parents in the community to consider joining this worldwide movement.

The Scouts represent the importance of family and teamwork all while teaching important qualities such as leadership and discipline.

This was according to long-serving Scout and 1st Bryanston Scouts assistance troop scouter Peter Sumner.

Sumner joined the Bryanston troop as a Cub at the young age of eight before proceeding to the Scouts at the age of 11. “I joined because some of my friends went to Cubs and my mother was a guide in the UK and encouraged me to join and experience it.”

He added that some of the best memories come from his time as a Scout. “The summer-long camps that we used to have, an example is at East London, Drysdale Beach, Ngodwana, Drakensberg amongst others. And of course there was a fund raising ballet performance of Swan Lake which we put on for the public which had us scouts prancing around in tutus,” Sumner recalled.

The experienced scouter previously held the positions of troop scouter, district trainer, district commissioner, assistance district comer of scout activities.

Sumner encourages more children and parents in the community to consider joining this worldwide movement. “[The Scouts] teach discipline and gets children outdoors, and being able to respond to things like emergencies, teaches children life skills. It’s a wonderful group that has a long history with good leadership.”
