Players hit the turf at Discovery Soccer Park

WANDERERS – This is the first tournament that the park has hosted since the Covid-19 lockdown began.

The turf was abuzz at the Discovery Soccer Park in Wanderers when it recently hosted its Champs of the Turf indoor soccer tournament.

According to the park’s Patric Murphy, the tournament was created to not only celebrate the instalment of the new turf but also the joy of hosting a tournament and bringing competitive soccer back.

This is the first tournament that the park has hosted since the Covid-19 lockdown began. “[We] hosted 36 men’s teams and six ladies teams. We were fortunate enough to be joined by two international teams and two of our previous regional tournament champions from Durban.”

Games kicked off as early as 08:30 with two nail-biting finals taking place from 17:30. “[A total of] 553 goals were scored throughout the Champs of the Turf Tournament, but in the end after eight hours of soccer, the final two teams for both the ladies and the men’s were ready to play for it all,” said Murphy.

Figorous Ladies overcame an immensely strong women’s team, the One Touch Dribblers, to take home the winner’s trophy by an intense penalty shoot-out.

The men’s final followed in the same suite with Tequila Mockingbird defeating Football Flava with a decisive penalty shootout to take home the winner’s trophy.

“We would like to thank Discovery SA and the tournament sponsors Puma and Planet Fitness for the incredible prizes, as we ensured every player did not leave the tournament empty-handed.”

Murphy would also like to extend a special thanks to all of the players, spectators and staff who proved that, by sticking to the health and safety regulations, it could safely run a 5-a-side soccer tournament.

“Discovery Soccer Park cannot wait to host their next tournament and continue to fall in love with the most beautiful game on the planet, football,” said Murphy.
