The Sandton Cricket Club ‘Tigers’ are ready to kick off the new season with a bang.

With five senior teams and a new junior team structure, the club is well under way to start the season on October 2.

According to club chairperson Jeremy Meiring, this season will be unlike anything the Tigers have experienced before.

“Pre-season kicked off on August 17, with practice sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays our home fortress, Hyde Park High School.”

This season the club has entered three Sunday league teams and two Saturday league teams to battle it out for league honours. The teams are also set to play a few practice matches in September in preparation for the new season.

Meiring added that the excitement could be felt across the team as the Tigers have not only found themselves a new sponsor and partnered with a charity this season, but it will also have an academy backing its junior players.

“The Tigers [have] partnered up with International Workwear, a well-known safety wear retailer. The new formed partnership is very exciting in that the club’s playing uniform will be well looked after.”

This long-term partnership will also see both sides embark on a joint venture in wildlife conservation and awareness, an important aspect of the Tigers’ identity.

The club will also be endorsing the Play It Forward Foundation, a non-profit formed by one of its players. The foundation is aimed at collecting used sports equipment to distribute to previously disadvantaged communities.

“The Tigers have also welcomed PowerPlay Sports SA, a sports academy, who will cater and look after our young cubs.

“The academy will cater for U9, U11 and U13 players, and also look at kick-starting the girls’ cricket side,” Meiring added.

The academy also will make private one-on-on coaching available with a coaching professional on hand.
