DJ Milkshake is thriving in his new found passion for golf

WOODMEAD – Household name DJ Milkshake has a new passion for the greens.

Popular entertainer Kagiso Mabelane, better known as DJ Milkshake, is changing the status quo with his passion for both music and sport.

Testing out his father’s golf clubs a little later on in life, Milkshake has almost perfected his swing and is now a main committee member at the Country Club Johannesburg in Woodmead.

“My father has always been a keen golfer but I never really picked up the sport at an early age. When I did decide to give it a try, I would use his clubs and just go mess around with a couple of friends and that’s really how I got into it,” he said.

Having been a member at the club for a few years now, Milkshake said he was quite surprised when he heard he had become a main committee member last month.

“I blended well with a lot of people there. When this opportunity came about, I was quite shocked in the beginning but then I realised what an amazing opportunity this is.”

Fusing two worlds together, he said he wanted to show younger people that anything was possible.

“It’s an honour to be part of such a huge organisation and being the youngest person there means I will be learning from a whole lot of professionals and corporates.”

Breaking the stigma, he mentioned that the younger generations needed to become familiar with different lifestyles and experiences.

“By pursuing my passion, I am breaking barriers and introducing people to new worlds. With the Hip Hop Invitational [golf tournament], we thought it would be cool to bring that element of music into the sport. This is the right energy we need to inject into it and the right type of message we want to bring across. I think it really bashes down barriers to all the stereotypes around golf.”

Keen to learn, Milkshake said he would like to get into a few more golfing circles and play in some more tournaments this year.
