Never before had the Bryanston Sports Club tennis championships been completed in just three weeks, yet players had the energy to spare come the finals.
Glory was to be had across a whopping 16 events and 70 players gave it their all at the end of a tennis season disrupted by the lockdown but still saw the last league matches played out in recent weeks.
“I am very happy with the standard of tennis [at the championships], everyone seemed well rested after the lockdown,” explained the competition’s co-organiser, Gaynor Harris, who is also the head coach at Tennis Inc, the club’s coaching academy.
“There were a few minor injuries but most people had kept themselves fit by running during the lockdown and were in good shape by the time of the championships.”
She added that the club and tennis academy had seen many new people join up after tennis was reopened and was in a good space.
“We have had new people join both here and at our Dainfern academy. Tennis is booming and our tournaments are nice and full.”
Tournament co-organiser and fellow head coach at Tennis Inc, Adrian Corfield agreed that tennis was in a good space in Joburg and Bryanston club championships proved this.
“The guys played a lot of tennis in these three weeks and it has not always been easy,” he said.
“It has been hot and we have had some rain but the guys showed they were keen to play and that is how we finished so quickly.”
Tennis Inc will host a holiday clinic for young tennis players at the Bryanston venue from 7 to 9 December.
This will be their last event of the year.
