Rebels celebrate successful season

SANDTON – Members of the Rebels' community gathered safely to reflect on the season's best moment and outstanding players.

Sandton Cricket Club, known to the community as the Rebels, celebrated an astounding cricket season by honouring it players.

Members of the Rebels’ community gathered safely to reflect on the 2019/2020 season’s best moments and outstanding players at its first-ever awards dinner at the Milk Bar in Parkmore on 23 October.

Hosted by club chairman Jeremy Meiring, the venue came alive as the players each accepted their awards. According to Meiring, even with the challenges presented by Covid-19, the club adapted accordingly, making it a night to be proud of.

“As much as it was a much-anticipated event, the Covid-19 reality put a lid on the excitement as only a certain number of attendees could be accommodated. These restrictions only allowed for a third of the club membership to attend,” he said.

The club hosted guest speaker and Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) board vice-president Earl Glennistor who had high praise for the rapid growth of the club. Glennistor was excited about the hard work that the club’s leadership team put in to get cricket going at George Lee Park again.

Meiring also debuted the 2019/2020 season whereby the club entered five senior teams and two junior teams in the GCL leagues to participate in the Sunday 5, Sunday 7, Saturday 5, Saturday 6, Women’s Pool B and U11 and U13 leagues.

“We did exceptionally well with two bronze finishes in the Sunday 5 and Saturday 5 leagues, 4th place in the Women’s league, 5th place Saturday 6 and 6th out of 15 teams in the Sunday 7 league. There were too many highlights to mention but two double hundreds – one from Karen Woest (203*) and a scintillating 236 from Denovan Ekstraal – stood out,” Meiring added.

Both players took home the awards for Rebels Cricketer of the Year and Women’s Cricketer of the Year award.

Spirits remain high for next season with a number of projects and partnerships coming up and the addition of two more teams.

“The new season will also see the club entering an agreement with Hyde Park High School, not only to play home matches at their venue but also to take an active role in the development of the school’s cricket programme, with the South African Cricket Academy (Sandton) to play a pivotal role,” said Meiring concluded.
