Young athlete honoured as School Athlete of the Year finalist

The 12-year-old athlete is an avid swimmer, passionate hockey and squash player and fierce karateka.

St Stithian’s College for Girls learner Georgia Knight was honoured as one of three finalists for School Sports Athlete of the Year at this year’s Johannesburg Women in Sports Awards on 3 October.

The 12-year-old athlete is an avid swimmer, passionate hockey and squash player and fierce karateka at Fourways Dojo. Georgia was extremely proud to see her hard work pay off having been first introduced to the world of sport at just six months old.

“My parents would take me for lessons from six months old and I still do swimming as a sport,” she said.

Georgia’s favourite sport has been karate in recent years because it allows her to fuel her need for competition. “I love karate because it is a very disciplined sport, it teaches you self-defence which I think we should all know. I hope that one day schools will make karate or self-defence compulsory, especially for woman.”

She added that this award was not only a win for her but also for all of the young women out there. “I would love all girls to know that they can do any sport they want and not just what parents think girls want to do,” said Georgia.

The young athlete hopes to one day not only compete in karate at the Olympics but to also earn her Protea colours for squash and hockey.
