Meet Sandton Action Sports’ new general manager, Grant Webster

"What I want to do it impact the community for the better and raise funds for groups in need."

South Africa’s oldest action sports arena just received a new general manager.

Grant Webster technically began work on the first day of April but the lockdown meant his first few months were quiet.

This did not stop him, however, from planning ways to improve the facility and host new events.

“What I want to do it impact the community for the better and raise funds for groups in need,” he smiled.

“I used to have a Christmas event in KZN where I would bring 200 children from orphanages and get them food and presents and let them play action sports. I want to do something like that here, if not this Christmas then the next one.”

Webster has been involved in managing action sports arenas, organising tournaments and coaching teams in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal since 1984.

“I know the guys playing in KZN and when everything is normal I want to bring them through here maybe for a weekend of games against the guys in Joburg. While we have not been able to see action netball games during lockdown, we have had fitness training for the players.”

This has led to plans for fitness and yoga classes at the arena. The existing sports like action hockey and bubble soccer, Webster wants to promote even further. He also wants to reach out to home and cottage schools to get children active.

Other events the general manager wants to host include wine tasting, quiz evenings and music evenings. For the moment these will have to be pre-booked with a capacity of 50 people under lockdown regulations

“Many of the action sports players want to come here more than just once a week, if not just to play. They want to bring partners and family to social events like this.”
