Action cricket returns in full flow at Sandton Action Sports

Safety protocols notwithstanding, it is as if the players are having as much fun now as they did before lockdown started.

Action cricket is in full swing at Sandton Action Sports.

Every day the sounds of ball coming on to bat, stumps being broken and the banter between players is heard again at the arena.

Safety protocols notwithstanding, it is as if the players are having as much fun now as they did before lockdown started.

The arena in Sandown resumed its leagues as soon as the green light was given for non-contact sports to return, although action netball is still waiting for the go-ahead from government.

Upon arrival at the venue, one’s temperature is taken and information is recorded. No face mask means no entry, and players have to wear masks when not playing.

“Some people even wear their masks while they play,” said new general manager at the arena, Grant Webster.

“Most people are very happy to be back playing again and I have stayed some evenings as late as 8 or 9pm to meet the players.”

This is just in passing, as players have to leave as soon as their games are over.

Only 50 people are allowed in the arena at a time and social distancing is maintained by staff as well as procedures. There are also 11 sanitising stations around the venue.

“Some companies have also contacted us recently because they are interested in featuring corporate teams in the leagues. This is exciting for us and as soon as we hear action netball can come back we will play that again.”

In the time being, action cricket leagues are being played and Webster hopes to bring in new awards for different divisions.

“Obviously your guys who played cricket at school and who take the game seriously will do well in the A league. But it is also about participation, and for the guys in the D league who maybe didn’t play at school or are new to the game, I want to reward them as well.”
