Soccer is on the go again at Discovery Soccer Park venues

Soccer leagues are also scheduled to resume at the venues from 1 September.

Social games, corporate events and children’s soccer lessons are back at both Discovery Soccer Park venues.

The Sandton and Wanderers facilities were closed during ‘hard’ lockdown but have partially reopened since non-contact sports were allowed.

Soccer leagues are also scheduled to resume at the venues from 1 September.

“We have had an amazing response from players and parents of younger players who want to return,” said Discovery Soccer Park director, Moïra Valkin.

“We have made it safe with smaller lessons, up to four players in a class. Parents have been anxious to get their children healthy and active again, and the children wanted to see their friends and laugh and play.”

At the moment the lessons do not allow children to play matches, but rather they work on ball mastery, fitness and agility.

Everyone wears a face mask, only one player is allowed a water break at a time, temperatures are taken and questionnaires are filled out upon arrival. There are sanitising stations and soccer balls are sanitised between sessions, parents have to collect their children in a specific place, and no one must touch the soccer balls.

“We have a video on Facebook about all the protocols we have in place. Even the youngest players must have their parents tie their shoelaces tightly so coaches do not have to do that.”

She said the facilities were still working on skeleton staff but thanks to the support of the community things were looking up financially.

“There are still some spots for teams open in the leagues, so I would encourage anyone interested to join in.”
