Karen Woest is selected for SA

PARKMORE – Sandton Cricket Club's Karen Woest is selected to represent SA's U21 action cricket team.

Sandton Cricket Club star, Karen Woest (20) has been selected for the national U21 action cricket team to play at the World Cup in Melbourne, Australia, in October.

Woest has played in two action cricket world cups for her country, in Brisbane Australia in 2015 and in Dubai in 2017.

These were for the South African U18 and U21 sides respectively and Woest hopes her experience will help her reach loftier targets.

“I want to make a name for myself at the U21 team and be promoted to the open side,” the destructive batter and right arm off-spinner said.

“To do that I will need to improve all aspects of my game, all by small margins. I will need to work on my mindset and positivity.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Joburg’s action sports arenas have postponed their leagues, events and practices. The national action cricket team is supposed to train together once per month but it is unknown whether this will continue to happen.

In the meantime, Woest’s friend Chanel Koekemoer helps her train at home by bowling to her or facing her off-spinners.

In January, Woest scored a double century for Sandton Cricket Club, for which she is the women’s team captain, against Dalikay Cricket Club.

Her 201 not out came off 118 balls and was a club record for the highest individual score.

The innings included 20 fours and 14 sixes, with a strike rate of 170, and needless to say, she was player of the match.

It helped her team to reach 321/6 off their allotted 35 overs and win the match by a whopping 236 runs.
