Sandton Rebels women’s side finds new base of operations

HYDE PARK – Sandton Rebels find a new base of operations for their women's team at Hyde Park High School.

One year in and the women’s team of Sandton Cricket Club are finding their feet at their newly-established home ground, Hyde Park High School.

Sunny blue skies welcomed players to the school field in one of the first games at the venue on 14 March. Sandton Cricket Club, aka Sandton Rebels, were to take on Soweto Cricket Club for the penultimate match of the season after playing almost all their games away.

But when the Soweto side arrived half an hour late they forfeited the toss and the game was reduced by four overs either side to 31 overs per innings.

Sandton captain Karen Woest opted to bat first on a very grassy pitch, although moisture left behind by two days of rain would prove a challenge.

She opened the batting with Luthi Gogoba and scoring was difficult for the first two overs but wickets started to fall regularly afterwards. Woest was left taking the odd single and trying to scrape partnerships together but there was too much movement off the pitch and Soweto’s seam bowlers trapped many a batter on the pads or caught behind.

The pressure led to one or two run-outs as well.

As it was, Woest top-scored with 15 as Sandton were bowled out for 46 in 15 overs.

Soweto, by contrast, read the purchase on the pitch better and chased the target down in just 6.2 overs to win by eight wickets.

“We are still in our rebuilding stage and game time has been one of our biggest challenges,” said Sandton coach, Amos Maungwa.

“We have been fortunate enough to be accommodated by Hyde Park High School so I believe after our high-performance training in the season break, and the 15 to 20 new girls we attract from the school, we will challenge for the next trophy.”
