Sandton soccer stars shine

BRYANSTON – The Umbro 7v7 tournament is giving youngsters at SuperSport United Soccer Schools Sandton a different experience in the game.

Youngsters from SuperSport United Soccer Schools Sandton are currently competing for the Umbro 7v7 trophy.

The inaugural tournament is six weeks long and sees the various SuperSport United Soccer Schools across Gauteng take each other on at a neutral venue in Northcliff.

The second leg of the tournament, on 1 March, saw the Sandton outfit join forces with Greenside and Marks Park schools to form a larger, stronger unit called Central Gauteng. They played against similar conglomerations of soccer schools from as far as Pretoria, Bedfordview and Middelburg.

The Sandton youngsters helped their team perform better than most, and after 10 matches played in the first two weeks they only lost three games.

“We normally play 5-a-side games on special surfaces, so this tournament on a larger grass field helps the youngsters prepare for playing at school or clubs wherever else they may play,” said Mike Hughes of the Sandton school.

“Our whole purpose is to upskill individual players so when they play at the club or school level they have the confidence and ability to do well.”

Hughes boasted that this motive has helped players from the soccer schools be accepted into soccer academy teams in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

The Sandton outfit is hoping to continue its good form in the Umbro 7v7 tournament and then push on in training and continue to impress at the SuperSport United Soccer Schools Super Cup in October and November.

The Sandton soccer school opened in 2013 and is based at Bryneven Primary School.
