Sandton Cricket Club’s Karen Woest scores a double century to set up win

PARKMORE – Karen Woest single-handedly won a match for her team when she scored a double hundred.

Women’s cricket often does not receive the attention it deserves in South Africa, from government funding or media coverage.

So when something special happens in women’s cricket locally it is Sandton Chronicle’s pleasure to report on it.

Karen Woest (20), captain of Sandton Cricket Club’s women’s team, which is informally called Sandton Rebels, scored a double hundred in a recent club match.

Speaking to Sandton Chronicle, Woest said her 201 not out off 118 balls against Dalikay Cricket Club on 11 January was a club record for the highest individual score and was made more special by the fact that her team won by a whopping 236 runs.

Woest’s innings included 20 fours and 14 sixes, with a strike rate of 170, and needless to say, she was player of the match. It helped her team to reach 321/6 off their allotted 35 overs.

“I started playing cricket at the age of 12,” Woest recalled.

“At that time there was no girls cricket and I played with boys teams. In Grade 7, I played for Strubenvale Primary School’s first team. I also played club cricket at Springs Old Boys club for the 2012/2013 season.”

When women’s club cricket started in 2014, Woest played for Springs Old Boys, Kwathema and Kempton Park women’s teams.

Karen progressed from the Easterns U16 team to the U19 team and then to the women’s side.

Woest moved to Sandton Cricket Club last year and is working very hard for a place in the Gauteng Lions team.

“I want to develop young players and would love to represent the Protea ladies one day. I enjoy my cricket and always give my best. Teaching and coaching my fellow team players and under-privileged players is one of my greatest passions in life. I live to eat and sleep cricket.”

Woest has represented South Africa in indoor cricket at U18 and U22 level and is waiting to hear of her possible selection for the U20 World Cup in Australia this year.
