Success stories from South Africa Cricket Academy at George Lea Park
PARKMORE – Youngsters have a blast while playing for free at South Africa Cricket Academy.
The South Africa Cricket Academy is proud of three of its development players who represented the academy on a recent tour in Cape Town.
Relebogile Mokoena (10) and Sibusiso Nkosi (9) from Alexandra, and Kelebogile Seshabela (16) from Soweto together played for the Parkmore-based academy’s U9, U11, U13 and U19 teams in various matches over five days.
“We paid for the development players’ expenses on the tour,” said academy head coach, Amos Maungwa.
“The development players come for free sessions at the academy during the week and their meals are provided by the Milk Bar.”
Maungwa described the tour as successful and a great learning experience for the academy’s young teams. It was even more special for the development players, who had not been on a plane or visited Cape Town before.
“It was quite an experience for them and they appreciated it. We do not have corporate sponsors yet so we raise funds with the help of parents and take out of the academy’s profits to help the development players advance their cricket.”
That said, Maungwa believes success stories like these can help attract corporate sponsors, which will lead to further success stories.
The academy, which is based at George Lea Park, as also identified a need for quality girls and women’s coaching, where there is a lack thereof in South Africa.
The academy has focused on girls and women’s coaching of late and reaped a harvest of its fruit of labour when Karen Woest recently scored a double hundred in a club match.
