The inaugural Johnnie Walker Warrior Polo brought something different to Inanda Club on 24 November, featuring a different take to the sport and the sponsoring brand.
The theme of the event was Song of Fire and Song of Ice, referring to the A Song of Ice and Fire book series that inspired the Game of Thrones TV series.
Six polo matches were held between teams of contrasting kits and spectators dressed to impress, with partners dressing in opposite colours or even as characters from the franchise. Furthermore, the field was made smaller on the day and the spectator booths moved even closer to the action.
The smaller field ensured there was less chasing of the ball and more hitting, although the players and their horses exercised just as much as if they played on a full field, if not more.
Many spectators included media personalities and ‘influencers’ who were new to the game of polo.
“We decided to get involved highly into polo and this is a good partnership,” said Johnnie Walker assistant brand manager, Livhuwani Makungo.
He explained that the brand launched two new variants to its products on the day – song of ice and song of fire. “We are reinvigorating our brand. In the past, Johnnie Walker was enjoyed in small places and cigar lounges by men. Now we are bringing women and a cocktail vibe in. We believe there is a similar expression coming into polo where it is not just for men or the same traditional settings.”
Makungo added that the event proved itself successful and if Inanda Club agreed to host it again next year, they would definitely be back.
