Discovery Kicking it Forward Challenge kicks forward mental disabilities

PARKMORE – People with mental disabilities are treated like stars at Discovery Kicking it Forward Challenge.

No one was left out and everyone was a star at the Discovery Kicking it Forward Challenge, where people with mental disabilities came together to play soccer.

The fourth annual event saw more than 200 people of about 15 homes and organisations around Joburg, convene to play a series of friendly matches at Discovery Soccer Park, Sandton, on 14 November.

Banyana Banyana head coach and former captain, Desiree Ellis were present to open proceedings.

Smiles abounded and cheers rang out with every good pass, tackle or goal throughout the morning.

Between games, Zumba instructor Yali Friedman led the group through a fun dance routine.

At the end of the day, all attendees received certificates and a meal sponsored by Nando’s.

“Many of these people are excluded from society and we want to move toward inclusivity,” said the event’s co-founder, Dr Craig Nossel.

“We can see by the vibe they are enjoying themselves and this is an excellent opportunity.”

Nossel added that organisers hoped to host at least two of these events per year going forward, and perhaps not just in Joburg.

Tracey Mayhew of Chevrah Kadisha, a Jewish welfare organisation behind the event, said some of the participants came from difficult backgrounds that could include poverty and lack of support from the community.

“Every other day they are not noticed but here they can make friends and we love that they can get spoiled,” she said.

Mayhew added that Chevrah Kadisha was also involved in the Jozi Forum which holds protected workshops, where people with mental disabilities could work with people of similar backgrounds without fear of discrimination or prejudice.

Europcar sponsored transport for the participants on the day of the challenge.
