Spring League kicks off at Discovery Soccer Park Wanderers

About 1 000 children tore up the soccer fields at Discovery Soccer Park Wanderers with their soccer skills at the venue’s seventh annual Spring League tournament.

The 5-a-side soccer event, which features 150 teams from across Gauteng from U6 to U17 level, began with a weekend of grading games to group the teams together in similar skill levels, before the first of five weekends of matches kicked off on 27 October.

“We put the top teams up against each other and the weaker teams up against each other,” said the venue’s CEO, Ryan Kalk, who explained that the teams come from clubs, schools and social groups that do not normally play together.

“We really want the children to interact with different players from different backgrounds because they don’t get to do that in their league structures. Children from private schools, government schools and children who are home-schooled… We want the children to just continue their season and once their club season is finished they can get more and extend their season as much as possible.”

The 15-minute matches saw plenty of action. Parents cheered on from the sidelines as children raced against the clock to score as many goals as possible.

Kalk said there will be no winning team at the Spring League. Every player will walk away with the same prizes.

He then thanked the event’s sponsors as well as the parents for bringing their children to five weeks of soccer.

“The children love it, the parents love it, we love having them here. We look forward to many more years of fun.”
