Malboro Gardens Football Club all about grooming young talent

MARLBORO – Another successful season marks the end of Marlboro Gardens Football Club's 34th year.

Marlboro Gardens Football Club is celebrating the end of another successful season of soccer.

Already things are winding down at Marlboro Stadium as the last league games and friendlies take place in the final weekends of September.

Muhammed Fakir, club secretary and U13 team manager, said while the club achieved respectable results in the Rand Central Local Football Association leagues and cups, and a few local tournaments the club participated in, the main thing was that the children had fun.

“We are a family-oriented club, there for the children,” he said. ” Our main objective is to promote development and football for the children.”

The club has been faithfully developing young soccer talent in the area since 1985. It features teams from U13 to U16 level.

The club’s annual Marlboro Festival which normally marks the end of the soccer season, was held in June this year and saw a whopping 75 teams from all over Gauteng participate.

The format of the festival means that there was no overall winner. But matches are always competitive and well supported.

“We will turn 35 years old next year and will hold a banquet for all our juniors after the festival is held in June again.”

The season kicks off in March next year and Fakir invited anyone interested in the sport to contact him or watch a game or two.
