Rugby for all

BRYANSTON – A day of friendly rugby matches is held at Bryanston High School.

Rugby fans could not have asked for more when Bryanston Honey Badgers hosted a day of friendly matches.

Nine rugby clubs pitched up at Bryanston High School on 24 August, along with teams from U7 to U18 level. Where a club could not feature a full team in an age group, players from other clubs donned new kits and helped them out to make a full team.

“It’s a non-competitive tournament, like all games in our union at this level,” said Badgers chairperson, Anthony Losco. “The managers may keep the scores in mind but it is not meant to be serious.”

Losco explained that many of the clubs send their best players to compete at inter-provincial tournaments while match days like this one provide opportunities for every player to get a game or two.

“The highlight for me was the old boys’ game and the camaraderie shown there.”

This was the first old boys’ game that Badgers had organised, and it featured older players from St Stithians Boys’ College and Dale College Boys’ High School.

While the Dale College team were much older than their opponents on average, the game still produced excellent rugby before the final whistle blew and Saints walked away with the win.

The participating clubs were Wanderers Rugby Club, Germiston Simmer Rugby Club, Bryanston Honey Badgers, Ennerdale Rugby Football Club, Tshuma Stingers, Khosa Sports Club, Johannesburg Police Rugby Club (Bobbies), Diggers Rugby Club, and Alex Wolves Rugby Club.
