Bryanston Honey Badgers take on the new rugby season

BRYANSTON – The new rugby season has begun, and Badgers is on the front foot.


Bryanston Honey Badgers are back in action now the new rugby season has started.

The club which operates out of Bryanston High School develops rugby skills of youngsters aged six to 18.

With another 21 affiliated rugby clubs, the Badgers play round robin matches every Saturday on a non-competitive basis, where sportsmanship and respect are promoted more than winning.

“All coaches and administrators are volunteers and carry out the functions of the club on the basis of the ‘Love of the game’,” said club chairperson, Anthony Losco.

“The focus is on the players having fun experiences and a love for the game which keeps bringing them back for more. We teach our players respect, dedication and commitment on and off the field.”

Furthermore, coaches teach youngsters coaching techniques and help them learn how to be referees.

“We sponsor a few development players, but want to increase development players substantially as we believe there is talent within our area, but not always the means for this talent to shine.”

Losco added that the club worked closely with the Play it Forward charity. “This charity does not deal in any forms of cash, instead collects sports gear and equipment and distributes their collections to those in need.”

Badgers volunteers are all Boksmart certified and aim to have all coaches reach coaching level two. Head coach, Craig Wardle is qualifying with his level two this year and there are also five level one qualified coaches.

Badgers is looking at starting a cross-country structure as well.
