Sandton canoeists compete in provincial championship

SANDTON – Local canoeists competed against people from around the province in the South African Marathon Championships.

Local paddlers from the Sandton area, including a learner from St Davids Marist Inanda, participated in the South African Marathon Championships.

The paddlers who are from the U8 category through to 80 years old competed in the championships. Some of the learners who participated in the Gauteng Canoe Union School league achieved great results at the Gauteng Marathon Championships event hosted earlier in June. Numerous paddlers then participated in the South African Marathon Championships held at Cradlemoon from 15 to 17 June where the reigning South African champions were crowned.

Against strong competition in the interprovincial, Gauteng paddlers, both male and female, pitted their ability against the best in the country.

One of the critical skills of canoe marathon racing is the portage and the ability to climb out the boat, pick it up and run a short distance carrying it, then putting it back into the water without slipping, falling into the water, tripping, dropping the boat etc even when jostled by other racers from time to time as it can result in serious delays in time and losing positions.
