Games go to the wire

Things are heating up at the Sandton Action Sports Arena thanks to the coming to an end of an action netball season and the start of a brand new action cricket league.

Every night the arena is jam-packed with people either playing these sports or coming to support a loved one who is.

Shouts of encouragement and sometimes frustration mix with the clashing of cricket bats and balls, and the blowing of whistles on the netball courts.

“Our new cricket season started this week but it is not too late for someone to join if they are interested,” said arena manager, Samantha Sibanda.

She explained that while one could register a team of eight players in one of the eight cricket league divisions if you did not have enough players or were on your own you could contact the arena which would place you in a team.

“Our corporate league, which has six divisions, is currently full though so it is just the social league that is available.”

The cricket league runs until August, when a new league will begin almost immediately upon its conclusion.

The stakes are even higher for the netball games, meanwhile, as the last group games are currently being played and semi-finals and the final for the current league will be held in early July.

The new netball league will start on 15 July.

“I would again invite anyone interested to come play sport here. It’s a fun way to get fit and also meet other people.”

Sibanda said Sandton Action Sports Arena had something for the whole family thanks to a great restaurant and bar.

The arena also hosts action hockey, soccer, bubble soccer and dodgeball and is available to dance and fitness groups. Virtual darts, pinball, pool and foosball are also played at the arena.
