Bryanston’s best bowlers do proud

BRYANSTON – Local bowlers impress at nationals at an international tournament in Wales.

Bryanston Sports Club has never been prouder of its lawn bowlers after they performed well in national and international tournaments recently.

Proteas bowler, Prince Neulonde represented South Africa at the Atlantic Rim Championships in Cardiff, Wales, where he helped South Africa’s triples team return with a gold medal.

“The highlight of the tournament was we played the round robin of nine games unbeaten and then the team we beat in the final, team Scotland, South Africa played against them before we arrived and South Africa were beaten 27–4,” Neulonde told Sandton Chronicle.

“When I arrived I heard the story they had beaten our side. I started to say ‘okay I am going to show them how to play bowls as well’.”

The Bryanston resident added that when playing against some of the best bowlers in the world, he felt inspired by them and decided to focus more and use his ‘skills from South Africa’.

Neulonde, who also works as a bartender at the sports club, started playing bowls at the club 10 years ago.

“I started to bowl with my dad at a time when I was a greenkeeper. I made lots of friendships and I enjoy the game each and every time [I play].”

Chairperson of bowls at the sports club, Ian McKenzie was full of praise for Neulonde.

“Prince is a role model for all of us,” he said. “He ticks all the boxes for what you want to promote the sport. He is young and athletic, and an excellent bowler and encouraging of other players.”
