Local athlete to compete in World Triathlon Championships

SANDTON – Fallon Finlayson will be travelling to Switzerland in August to compete in the world championships.

A Sandton-based athlete will have her dream come true when she competes in the World Triathlon Championships in August.

Fallon Finlayson previously appeared in the Sandton Chronicle when she swam the Midmar Mile eight times to raise funds for rhino conservation. She was featured in Swimmer helps raise R13 000 for wildlife [Week ending 1 March].

In January this year, Finlayson represented Gauteng in the South African Championships and came in first place. This result helped her qualify for the world championships.

“This is the first time being selected for world champs. It’s an absolute dream come true and a selection I am truly honoured and humbled about. From starting triathlon eight years ago and perusing it as my dream, I can go and live it,” said Finlayson.

Currently, Finlayson is training for the Ironman Triathlon which takes place in June. “It is very different training to how I will train for the world champs. At the moment I am focusing on long endurance but for the world champs it’s a short course.”

From mid-June, Finlayson will focus her training on speed work as well as strength and agility training. “I will focus on getting faster, losing weight and getting more strength training in.”

She added that there is a group of other South African athletes who have been selected to compete in the championships, however, due to the cost involved many people have declined the opportunity.

The championships will be hosted in Lausanne in Switzerland from 30 August to 1 September. In order to raise the funds necessary for the trip, Finlayson will be setting up fundraisers to help raise the necessary money to compete in the championships.
