Wanderers Road Race sees record numbers in 100-year history

The Wanderers Road Race saw a record number of runners this year, after 100 years of hosting the event.

The annual race – this year called the Wanderers Aucor Property Road Race with Discovery Vitality – saw 6 700 people hit the streets of Illovo and surrounding suburbs for a 21,1km half marathon, 10km race, and 5km fun run/walk on 26 August.

The Wanderers Club was the start and end point for the second run in the Vitality Run Series.

Former chairperson of the Wanderers Athletics Club, Graham Calder said the race was the oldest road race in Joburg, existing since the Wanderers Club was based where Johannesburg Park Station was now.

“We rated this year as one of the best races we have staged,” he said.

“There were very few glitches and we are still getting comments on how good the race was.”

He added that this was because the routes took runners along scenic, tree-lined streets in quiet suburbs, and the half marathon went through James and Ethel Gray Park.

Moreover, the road race is known for being well-organised with everything running conveniently and smoothly.
