Casual bowls fun at Morningside Country Club

SANDTON – Willy's Day was recently hosted for the 17th time at the Morningside Country Club to raise funds for the SANParks Honorary Rangers.

The Morningside Country Club bowls section hosted their biggest tournament with about 224 participants which included Protea bowlers and first-time players.

The tournament, Willy’s Day, was held on 1 May and is an annual tournament that has been running for 17 years.

Mark Struwig of the club said the event was founded by Willy Bright 17 years ago at Pirates Bowling Club.

“It was started to raise funds for the beneficiary, the SANParks Honorary Rangers,” said Struwig.

He added that it was a fun day and even the worst team on the day could win the day. “There is a mystery end which affects the scoring systems and every bowler wins a prize.

“We have four bowling greens… with 56 players on the green where normally there would be 48 bowlers. A total of 17 different clubs took part on the day.”
