Bucs cruise into second round of the Nedbank Cup

JOBURG - Ghanaian single-handedly destroys Ajax Cape Town's ambitions of advancing into the next round of richest cup competition in SA football.

Bernard Morrison’s Orlando Pirates star shone brightly in this Nedbank Cup tie as he single-handedly dismantled the Ajax Cape Town defence with his brace, sending the Buccaneers cruising into the last 16 round with a 2–0 scoreline.

The Pirates coach Micho Sredojevic had told a press conference ahead of the clash that this was not a grudge match after his team was thrashed 3–0 in the Absa Premiership by Ajax. But the way his boys rose to the occasion in this tie had all the ingredients of a revenge game. From the word go, the Buccaneers played like men possessed with quick and pinpoint passes and excellent runs into the penalty area.

Judging from the number of missed opportunities, it was clear the message and mood in the Bucs camp was that of total annihilation of the opposition.

Pirates could have easily banged in more than five goals with the visitors also having a fair share of chances that went begging. It seemed that Ajax’s plan was to sit back and absorb the pressure in the hope of catching the home team on the counter.

However, it was Morrison’s strike in each half that settled the matter. The versatile attacking winger has seemed to have cemented his starting line-up for the Bucs and could have scored more than a brace.

Most of the sports journalists in the media were asking, Morrison who? But when the Man of the Match had to be substituted in the 70th minute of the game due to cramps, his name had been seared into the memories of all the hacks.
