U8 soccer season finale all about fun

BORDEAUX – Even though the game is very competitive, the U8 soccer teams still remembered to have fun.

The final Rand Central Football Association League U8 tournament of the season saw many teams from across Joburg gather at the Old Parktonian Sports Club on 17 September.

Colin Hutton, Old Park’s soccer committee member, said the club’s U8 soccer A and B teams represented them. He added that no scores were recorded since the tournament was classified as non-competitive.

“But we know, there is no such thing as a non-competitive game,” he said, laughing.
Indeed, not only did the young players try to prove their skills, but their parents were equally vocal, supporting them from the sidelines.

Hutton said the day was mainly about teaching the little soccer stars discipline and to work together as a team.

“What we try and instil in the players is an enjoyment for sport and the realisation that it is not an individual game, but a team game.”

Byron Silver, the U8A team coach, said it was important for the team to grow together, have fun, play, bond and especially enjoy themselves.

“From next year it will be another big step up to U9 and it remains quite competitive,” he said.
