Bryanston torch their opponents

BRYANSTON – Bryanston has walked away with another victory at this year's Torch Trophy athletics competition.

The Torch Trophy is an athletics competition that has been around for years and is steeped in tradition.

This competition has always taken place between four leading high schools in the northern suburbs; Greenside High School, Hyde Park High School, Queens High School and Bryanston High School.

On 10 August, the first round of competition took place at Hyde Park High School. Athletes from each school took to the track to compete in their areas of specialisation, from intense 100m sprints to the endurance-testing 1 500m run, and the rivalry of relay races.

A competitive afternoon finally resulted in Bryanston High School taking home the Torch Trophy, for the third year in a row, when the team’s combined efforts brought in an excellent 278 points overall. This was a clear 77 points of second placed, Queens High School.

“I am so pleased with the results of the 2017 Torch Trophy,” said Isabel Smith, head of athletics at Bryanston High School.

“I am even more proud that the team has managed to bring home this trophy for three years now, it’s such a great achievement.”
