Sandton’s own little leaguers showed they are a force to be reckoned with when they narrowly beat the Old Parks Soccer Club on their own turf.
The U6B team of Crusaders Football Club were up to the challenge on a chilly morning in Bordeaux on 29 July, and from the first touches of the Little League game, under the Rand Central Local Football Association, showed how determined they were to win.
Parents and siblings attended in full force. Dressed warm and armed with coffee in hand, they cheered the valiant players on from all around the small field.
As every courageous tackle was made, every pass expertly executed and every shot at goal unleashed with tenacity, applause and advice was shouted out by all in attendance, not least of which was from the coaches who acted as referees as well, and sometimes had to compete with the voices of enthusiastic parents.
Despite the diversity of advice, the youngsters showed true grit and played with all their hearts – their skill and determination recognised by all.
As the game went to the wire, Crusaders edged ahead and held on decisively for a 4–3 win.
“We passed like we were supposed to and went wide like we were supposed to,” said Crusaders coach, Lyssa Green. “We also try to have fun and improve the players so they do not just have skill, but are fair and have manners.”
For Old Parks coach, Mirriam Monnatlale, the players showed great improvement since they took up the sport not long ago. “What we need to concentrate on now is playing well in the last minutes of the game,” she said.
