WENDYWOOD – The Wendywood Squash Club is eager to recruit new members to their four-court club in Darwin Street.

The 40-year-old club’s membership has dwindled recently as more people have headed to the gym or the couch instead of the squash court.
Club committee member Grant Hamilton said, “Squash is a disciplined sport where you have a partner waiting for you to join them in an intense 30 to 45-minute game. It is believed to be one of the most intensive exercises for the body.”
Hamilton said the club was welcoming squash newbies, and ex-squash players who might want to come back to get some exercise and play in the league.
“I have been a member at Wendywood for 39 years and have squash memberships around the world and go to the world masters competition most years. We are known to be a small, competitive club. It is great to be part of a community here and get back to the community values we once cherished,” said Hamilton.
The courts, which have been recently refurbished, are used by 70 members at present. Members range in age from five to 74 years old. The club is also the home of St Peter’s College squash.
Members will receive access to facilities, the opportunity to play in the 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th Gauteng Squash leagues and enter tournaments. With the recruitment of new members, the club hopes to advance into more leagues.

Club secretary Ingrid Moralee said they hoped to renew partnership with Egoli Squash, a public benefit outreach programme of Central Gauteng Squash that uses sport to curb poverty for disadvantaged youth from Alexandra, Soweto and the inner city. If the club is able to recruit more members, they will be able to host Egoli Squash on a more regular basis.
The club works on a ‘pitch and play‘ system, where the public is allowed to make use of their facilities and do not need to be club members to book a court.
Membership costs R1 300 per year for men and R700 for women, senior citizens, schoolchildren and students. Players pay an additional R11 for lights when they make use of the facilities.
