Sandton sports club to get revamp

SANDTON — The club's grounds are in the process of being upgraded

The Sandton Sports Club, the only facility of its nature in Parkmore, Hurlingham, Sandton and surrounding areas, will undergo a serious makeover this year.

Gia Sinclair, a board member, said, “First thing next week [week ending 20 January], the main soccer fields will be upgraded and irrigation systems will be installed. We will also upgrade the lighting on the fields and all cabling will be upgraded.”

The new lighting will be installed so that local sports lovers can take part in games such as touch rugby and five-a-side soccer at night.

“Sandhurst Preparatory [College] has kindly sponsored [us with] paving for the west side of the field. This area will serve as parking space for the school and the sports club.”

There are also plans for a new restaurant. “We are in the second-round phase of finding a food and beverage provider. This [restaurant] will be children-friendly, and we want to incorporate a play area for the children outside of the restaurant.”

Regarding George Lea Park, which lies adjacent to the sports club, Sinclair said, “We need to clear plants off the fencing and we are in conversation with City Parks to assist us with trimming the plants that grew a lot after the rains.”

She said there was a need for a clear vision and plan for the park. “Community members can get involved in clean-ups in the park as there is still litter scattered across the area.”

Many people had offered to help, and the sports club would hold a meeting with interested parties to brainstorm ideas.

Community members who wish to get involved in any way can contact Sinclair.
