Karate students shine at championship

SANDTON – Karate students of Macson Dojo kick, punch and block their way to success at recent karate championships.

Macson Dojo, a mixed martial arts (MMA) centre, hosted its annual Shotokan MMA Championships at Unika Primary School in Randburg on 15 October.

More than 80 students from different MMA training centres and clubs participated.

Under the guidance of chief instructor, sensei Gary Mclean, the MMA centre specialises in judo, karate and kickboxing training and has been operating for 26 years.

Sensei Mia Calder of Die Akerboompie School, who teaches three to five-year-old students, was one of the judges for the event.

“Age groups from three to 13 competed for medals in Kihon (formal movements), Kata (specific movements), Kumite (freestyle fighting) and Osae komi waza (grappling),” said Calder.

She congratulated all the participants who competed in the event. “The students showed great sportsmanship through discipline and courage.”
