Map Games intoduces other sporting codes

ALEXANDRA – Other sporting codes will now feature in the annual Map Games which have been traditionally reserved for soccer.

Former Bafana Bafana midfield maestro, Maimane Alfred Phiri will, as of next year, introduce other sporting codes to his hugely successful annual football tournament.

The Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) Games 2017 will include a golf day and a marathon on its calendar. This year, netball was added to the tournament. “My vision is to grow these games to include all other sporting codes such as basketball, golf, tennis, cricket, rugby, road running and others.

“I am currently holding talks with Central Gauteng Athletics and will soon be meeting with various Alex athletic clubs to see how we can work together to further the interests of road running in the township.”

He said 17 and 18 June next year would be reserved for a marathon and a golf day respectively. “I will reveal more on these two projects once the talks with the various stakeholders have been completed,” said the SA football legend who also spent a number of years playing the beautiful game in Turkey.

“The netball games went according to plan and I have no doubt that golf and the marathon will do likewise come next winter,” said Phiri who still plays soccer but more on the social side for Real Sundowns Football Club in the Alex Masters Soccer League.
