Sandton residents paddle to glory

MEYERTON - Sandton residents come out on top at the Victoria Lake Canoe Club river race.

Sandton was represented by two residents, Bruce Dixon and Daryl Dingley, at a canoe race on the Klip River hosted by Victoria Lake Canoe Club.

The race started at Daleside Ixoxo Manzi Riverside Resort and ended at the Danie Maclean Park in Meyerton, a distance of about 20km. Spokesperson for the Gauteng Canoe Union, Jennie Dallas, said new paddlers learning the ropes required a minimum number of races to be A-graded, which enabled them to participate in major river races throughout SA.

Dallas added, “It was a cold drizzly wet day on Saturday 14 May as paddlers confidently approached the mine rapid, over the hill from the Bass Lake, where numerous boats were washed sideways into rocks and boulders resulting in a number of boats being damaged and unable to continue the race.”

Despite the tough conditions, Dixon and Dingley won the K2 race category in a time of 01:34:00. The two canoeists who were novices last year, have completed a number of A-grade river races. The pair also topped the Sub-Veteran age group.
