Although languishing ninth on the SAB League table with only 13 games to go, FC Godisanang believes its target to challenge for league honours in the SAB League is still on track.
This despite a 2-1 home loss to Bidvest Wits development side, Bid Boys who lie second to table-topping Boca Juniors, an Eldorado Park outfit.
Godisang coach Abbey Mofomme said he was confident they could still rise to the occasion and mount a late challenge for league honours, although the team was not a settled one.
“The team is an ongoing development project,” he said.
“We have players that have just completed matric and some of them are moving forward to tertiary institutions in various parts of the country while others have found jobs.
“This means that week in, week out, we have to build a new squad. But despite all these setbacks, I am still confident we can rise to the occasion in the remaining 13 games of the season.”
In the game, Bid Boys went into the half-time break leading 2-0, courtesy of a 20th-minute strike by captain Renanao Leepile and the second five minutes later by Luciano van Heerden.
Lanky Bid Boys substitute striker, Sifiso Nkosi could have increased the lead had his header in the dying minutes been on target. However, it was Godisanang who, minutes later, got on the scoresheet through a well-taken header by Donald Somo for the consolation goal.
“I had instructed my boys to grab two quick goals and then ensure they close them down and not allow them to play their normal football, and this paid dividends,” said Bid Boys coach Ashley Makhanya.
Godisang is currently in its third season of the SAB League, which is the third division promotional league of the South African Football Association. From this league, promoted teams move up a rung to the ABC Motsepe League, then the National First Division which is a precursor to the prestigious Premier Soccer League.
