Giant killers Baroka back in the hunt for Nedbank Cup

JOBURG - Giant killers Baroka Football Club are back in the hunt for Nedbank Cup after their successful stint in 2011 where they beaten in the semifinals of the competition.

The Limpopo outfit based in Ga-Mphahlele near the provincial capital Polokwane, ply their trade in the National First Division (NFD) and rose to prominence in 2011 by reaching the semifinal of the Nedbank Cup.

They managed this feat by upsetting top premiership sides such as Moroka Swallows and Kaizer Chiefs but were unfortunate to slip by the wayside in the semis where they beaten by Black Leopards on penalties.

Founded in 2007, the team will be among other NFD teams to participate in this year’s Nedbank Cup, and judging from their performance and position on the log standings, they are destined to go far again in this competition.

The other seven NFD teams in the competition include AmaZulu, Highlands Park, Mthatha Bucks, league tailenders Moroka Swallows, Santos, Mbombela United, and Black Leopards.

The NFD teams will be joined by eight other teams from the South African Football Association-run leagues for the March kick-off. These teams include EC Bees from the Eastern Cape, Sibanye Golden Stars from the Free State, African All Stars from Gauteng, Magesi FC from Limpopo, Milford FC from KwaZulu-Natal, Polokwane City Rovers from the North West and Steenberg United from the Western Cape, which all ply their trade in the ABC Motsepe League. The final team is United Rovers from the Northern Cape, the only team that plies its trade in the SAB League.

These 16 teams will be joined by all 16 teams from the Premier Division for the last round of 32. A draw will be conducted at a later stage to determine who plays who in this round.
