Lions star makes history

JOBURG - Proteas and Bizhub Highveld Lions batsman Temba Bavuma became the first black African player to score a Test hundred for South Africa.

Bavuma achieved this feat in the second Test against England at Newlands.

It took six Test matches for the 25-year-old right-handed batsman to score his first ton after he endured a tough time in the Test series against India on the sub-continent.

Speaking to the media after his achievement, a delighted Bavuma said he hoped that his historic century would help inspire many other young black cricketers who want to play for the Proteas one day.

“It is not just me making my debut, it’s being a model and an inspiration to other kids, black African kids, in particular, to aspire to. So I think in achieving this kind of milestone it will strengthen that,” said Bavuma.

He also received praise from President Jacob Zuma who hailed Bavuma as a true role model to many young children.

“We would like to congratulate Temba Bavuma for reaching this historic milestone,” said Zuma in a statement.

“He has done the country proud and is a role model for millions of our young sports enthusiasts. He has confirmed the existence of talent amongst our youth which just needs support and nurturing.”
