The Punisher makes a comeback

SUNNINGHILL - Sunninghill resident and Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) fighter, Martin 'The Punisher' van Staden will make his way back to the hexagon holding an impressive record of 22 wins and only eight losses.

This marks the 31st bout of his career as he competes for the welterweight championship title against current champion David Buirski on 12 December.

The welterweight division is known to be cursed, as no athlete has been able to defend the belt successfully in four years. Van Staden has come close as the number one contender on two occasions but a knee injury in 2013 against Hendry Fadipe at EFC 23, put him out of contention for nine months.

Van Staden made his comeback at EFC 33 against Jeremy ‘Pit Bull’ Smith and won the bout with an impressive KO in the first round. He is also currently on a back-to-back KO streak which is an achievement on its own.

Born and bred in Durban, Van Staden is the most experienced veteran in the EFC and believes experience and skill are what will win him the title. “I believe in myself and my team call me arrogant, but that’s the truth. I want to break him [Buirski] mentally,” he said.

EFC 46 will be at Carnival City on 12 December, and fans can get tickets at Computicket or catch the fight live at 8pm on SuperSport.
