Discovery Sport Industry Summit at Vodaworld

JOBURG - The Discovery Sport Summit was held at Vodaworld in Midrand where influential leaders of leading brands, governing bodies and organisations discussed marketing and branding aspects of the South African sporting industry.

Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation, Gert Oosthuizen, said the summit was important as it addressed sport, something that had brought the nation together many times, especially during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

“South Africa uses sport for social cohesion and nation building,” he said. “We have seen how sport has changed people’s lives, and it is great to see corporate social investment programmes that support different sporting activities for children interested in sport.”

CEO of Safa Development Trust, Robin Petersen, said it was important to focus on sport development. “Only 10 percent of the corporate social investment spend in South Africa is used for sport development,” he said. “More needs to be done to sustain the talent of young people interested in sport.”

Megan Collinicos, head of marketing at DHL Africa said the marketing rugby sponsorships in Africa have been a challenge; the company has had to help people understand rugby first and then market the sport more effectively.

Deven Grevemberg, CEO of the Commonwealth Games Federation spoke about the work that went into marketing and making the Commonwealth Games a success to all nations. TransAfrica Media marketing manager, Sanini Mangisa, said hockey was taking root in schools, but more needed to be done to take the sport to higher levels.

Other speakers included corporate affairs director at McDonald’s SA, Sechaba Motsieloa, and Lance Walker, Global Performance director at Michael Johnson Performance.
