Brilliant Klate leads Wits come back

JOBURG - Bidvest Wits Football Club produced a brilliant second half performance to defeat a defiant Golden Arrows team by 3-2 at the Bidvest Stadium on 21 November.

Wits continued their impressive start to the new season with another spirited team performance led by Daine Klate, who has been in great form in the new campaign.

The first stanza of the game saw both teams go into the half-time break still deadlocked at nil all. Wits looked the better of the two teams with Sibusiso Vilakazi missing a golden opportunity in the 20th minute.

Golden Arrows was the first to score at the 51st minute, courtesy of Deon Hotto, after a great pass from Kudakwashe Mahachi on the left wing. Arrows lead did not last for long, as Phakamani Mhlambi of Wits made a brilliant run on the edge of the box to connect with a great cross from the left to draw level.

Lack of communication at the back by Moeneeb Josephs and Siyabonga Nhlapho once again gave Arrows the lead as Mabhuti Khanyeza capitalised on the Wits defence mistake.

With ten minutes left of the game, Arrows goalkeeper Maximillian Mbaeva received a red card after handling the ball outside the penalty box, following a counter-attack by Wits.

The resulting set piece was taken by Klate, who calmly slotted it onto the top corner to put the ‘Clever Boys’ level with only eight minutes to go. Klate completed his brace a few minutes after with another top notch finish to win the game for Wits.

Speaking to the media after the game, a delighted Klate admitted that they were not at their best on the day despite walking away with all the three points.

“By standards this was not our best game, but if you want to win the league title, you have to play bad and still be able to win games, and that ‘s what we did today,” he said.
