Pupil receives gold medal at karate champs

SANDTON- St Stithians Girls’ Preparatory pupil Claudia Dobson (13) represented South Africa at the 8th World Karate Federation, Commonwealth Karate Championships in New Delhi, India.

Dobson won a gold medal at the championships for individual U14 female kumite (defence fighting) in the 47+ kg category.

In addition, she won a bronze medal for individual female kata U14, which made her the only South African to win two medals and the only South African to win a medal for kata.

The championships attracted more than 600 top athletes and delegations from 10 countries including India, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, South Africa, Botswana, and Malaysia.

This is the second time that Dobson has represented South Africa at these championships. In 2013, she was not only selected to receive her official Protea colours endorsed by South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee but won a silver medal for kumite and a bronze medal for kata at the 7th Commonwealth Karate Championships in Montreal, Canada.
