Pirates beats AmaTuks in Telkom Knockout

JOBURG - Orlando Pirates recently booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout after beating the University of Pretoria by 2-1.

Pirates dominated most part of the first half of the game and were the first to score. Amatuks did not create any clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities in the first half, and Pirates went into the break leading by an odd goal.

The second stanza was more entertaining as both teams placed their feet firmly on the gas. Amatuks drew first blood after the break when Thabo Mnyamane headed in a great cross from the right wing to put his side level in the 55th minute.

Pirates created multiple chances and could have buried the game within 90 minutes, but their lack of finish in front of the goals let them down.

Kermit Erasmus missed a golden opportunity when his penalty was brilliantly saved by Amatuks goalkeeper Washington Arubi halfway through the second half after Khethukuthula Zwane was penalised for a handball.

Pirates enjoyed a brilliant finish by Thabo Rhakhale in the 39th minute with Arubi having no chance of stopping it as it flew into the top corner of the net.

The game went into extra time as none of the two teams could break the 1-1 deadlock. Pirates grabbed a late winner courtesy of Ayanda Gcaba in the 118th minute to set up an enticing encounter with Maritzburg United in the quarterfinals.
