Montrose cricketers off to compete in Australia

SANDTON - Montrose Primary School pupils Zack Momberg, Thando Makwetu and Cael Murray will make their school and country proud as they represent South Africa at the Junior Indoor Cricket World Series in Australia later this month.

Following numerous provincial indoor cricket tournaments, the three were scouted to play for the U14 national team which will leave for Brisbane, Australia, on 20 September. The cricketers will play against some of the best players from Australia and New Zealand in a series of seven round robins.

Principal of the school, Silvia Buschberger said, “Montrose is extremely proud of these boys. They represented our first cricket team for a tour to the United Kingdom earlier this year.

“For us, as a school, we always tell our players to dream big and we’re extremely proud that they saw the opportunity and worked hard to represent their country.”

The three boys expressed great excitement, with national team captain and Montrose Primary head boy, Thando Makwetu, saying they were interested to discover more about the level of cricket in Australia.

Momberg added that there are many techniques and skills that they can learn from other teams, which will help them improve and lead them to their dreams of playing for the Proteas cricket team in the future.

The school spokesperson and coach, Jono Leaf-Wright, concluded that the tournament was a great opportunity for the boys, as indoor cricket calls for all players to be top all-rounders, and added that all three pupils are exceptional outdoor and indoor players.
