Varsity College Sandton Golf Academy looks ahead

SANDTON - The Varsity College Sandton Golf Academy recently held their Annual Golf Academy Evening at Glendower Golf Course.

Oratile Matlapeng, on behalf of Varsity College Sandton, said the main focus of the evening was on the upcoming University Sports of South Africa Golf Tour and the goals of the academy for the rest of the year.

“After a busy start to the year, things will not be getting easier,” said Michael Ryan, a Varsity College Sandton student and captain of the golf academy.

“Studying full-time at Varsity College and pursuing a professional golf career is not easy.”

Gavan Levenson, the coach and member of the Professional Golfers’ Association, complimented the Varsity College Sandton Golf Academy. “What we predicted would take five years to set up has only taken three years and it is only getting better,” he said.

Matlapeng added that the evening was attended by all stakeholders of the academy which included, Tyrone Twilley, assistant coach and Professional Golfers’ Association member; Jessica Weston, biokineticist; Theo Bezuidenhout and Steven van Niekerk, golf psychologists; Jolene Mortimer, golf academy manager; Vasanthee Govender, student relations manager; parents of the players, as well as the golf academy members.

Vasanthee Govender closed the evening by speaking about the Annual Golf Day that Varsity College Sandton holds in aid of the Masixhasane Literacy Project. The project is aimed at raising funds to supply mobile libraries to schools in disadvantaged communities.

Matlapeng said this was met with great interest by the golfers and parents, especially after Govender reminded the audience that Varsity College Sandton’s core business is education. “It, therefore, makes sense that our most significant community engagement initiatives focus on education,” added Govender.

Matlapeng said the evening was a huge success. “The players are looking forward to competing and bringing the cup home,” he added.
