Sandton junior canoeists impress

SANDTON - Residents Theo Dreyer and Eric Arwidi impressed at the Gauteng Canoe Union Sprint Championships at Roodeplaat Dam on 29 March.

The competition was the Gauteng Canoe Union’s way to identify the top talent in sprint canoeing to represent the Gauteng team at the upcoming inter-provincial races set to take place at the end of April.

Gauteng Canoe Union spokesperson Jennie Dallas said, “The children participated in a cross section of races with distances of 1 000m, 500m, 200m, as well as a long distance race of 2 000m. The points that are earned for their positional finishes at these races are added up to reward the winners of the total points among the races and the Victor or Victrix Ladorum medals are presented at the end of the day’s racing for the accumulated events.”

The two Sandton canoeists, who train at Emmarentia Dam, impressed at the championship in preparation for the main event, with Dreyer finishing fourth overall in the U10 group, and Arwidi finishing with a second place medal in the U8 competition in what was his first canoe race.
