Cyclists show enthusiasm in Freedom Ride Jozi

JOBURG - The Freedom Ride Jozi kicked off at 7am on 22 March at the Sandton Gautrain Station and cyclists rode through Sandton, pedalled along Lower Park Drive by Zoo Lake in Parkview and proceeded to the finishline at Mushroom Farm Park.

Many of the cyclists displayed their persistent enthusiasm, despite the cold and overcast weather on the early Sunday morning. Some even sported whimsical outfits.

Metro police ensured the safety of the cyclists, motorists and spectators along the route. Around Zoo Lake, Metro police officers were stationed at the intersections of Ennis Road and Lower Park Drive; Donegal Avenue and  Lower Park Drive. Unlike on other parts of the Freedom Ride Jozi course, the roads around Zoo Lake remained open to traffic and the cyclists were integrated with regular traffic.

Metro police officers at the intersections directed and regulated ordinary traffic ensuring the cyclists’ safety. Many of the participants greeted and thanked the officers as they sped past.

While the ride was not a race, some eager participants had already completed the 28km ride by 9am. There was entertainment at the park for both the cyclists and spectators to enjoy.
