VIDEO: Jozi Cycle Week kicks off

FOURWAYS – With the aim to demonstrate the City of Joburg’s commitment to turning Joburg into a cycle-friendly city, the entity launched their new initiative called Jozi Cycling Week at Leaping Frog Shopping Centre on William Nicol Drive.

The event was held on 16 March and numerous cyclists attended, as well as City officials, the Diepsloot Cycling Forum, Metro police and representatives from the Greater Kyalami Conservancy.

This was the first event in a new week-long cycling awareness programme happening across Joburg leading up to the 27km Freedom Ride which will take place on 22 March from Sandton to Alexandra.

Member of the City’s mayoral committee for Transport, Christine Walters, explained that the Jozi Cycling Week promotes the roll-out of non-motorised transport facilities such as designated cycling and walking lanes.

“We want to build our infrastructure in such a way that commuters are encouraged to either cycle or walk to wherever they would like to go,” said Walters.

“We really want to acknowledge the Diepsloot cyclists for being part of this project,” Walters continued. “Because this is the route [William Nicol Drive between Diepsloot and Fourways]… we need to make sure that other motorists know that you [the cyclists] have a right to be on the road, that you must be safe and that you continue to promote this healthy lifestyle.

“There’s a silent revolution happening across the City,” she added in further gratitude to the attending cyclists. “The number of people who want better alternatives to commute are growing. One of these days we’ll see more people walking and cycling in the City, and it’s thanks to brave cyclists such as yourselves.”

After a safety presentation, cycling helmets and reflective vests were handed out before the group of cyclists took to William Nicol Drive for a short 2.5km ride to Indaba Hotel and back.

They were then asked to share their experiences with the City and also give their suggestions on how the entity can improve safety measures for cyclists and pedestrians alike on William Nicol Drive.
